Experiment for Children – How to make the starch?

potatostarch1Some days ago I randomly made myself a starch and when it discovered that the children had gone cycling with daddy, so the test must be repeated from the beginning.

Specifically, the plan was to make dinner the vegetable loafs, inside only carrots and potatoes (ok, onion and garlic as well). Grated carrot I had before, so I need to grate the potatoes. I grated potatoes, poured onto water and left to stand for a moment, before exhausting came the idea: why I should let down this water from the tap? It is, after all, the children show how the starch is made.

I poured a jug of water, and already during the photo shooting began to emerge a white jug bottom layer. Half an hour later the kids came home and saw this layer.

Now, we poured this water down from the tap and put starch on a plate to dry. Drying takes a lot of time at room temperature.

Starch was ready in about a day later. Then we explored starch from store and ours (the store one is whiter). Estonians use potato starch not corn starch usually. After all we tried to make a berry soup (we name it kissell and this is a thicker soup made for berries and juice). I can say that it has worked but require a little bit more starch than I normally need (two heaping tablespoons per 1 liter), but worked and blueberry soup was ready.
